About
I’m your typical nature lover – avid photographer, trekker and environmentalist all in one package. You can say one thing led to another. Since young, it’s been an unofficial family custom to “go downstairs” at 5.30pm to engage in a variety of sports – badminton, frisbee, netball, freeze and melt, playground games, poison ball, and other what-have-yous – while fully immersing us in the flora and fauna of the park downstairs. It is probably this which eventually incalcated in me a staunch love for the outdoors, and from there my desire to spearhead environmental initiatives grew, and I’ve since dabbled in a number of projects that have been immensely fulfilling and satisfying to me.
Lately, after being bestowed a hugely-anticipated Lumix for my 16th birthday, I’ve discovered the joy of photography. The thrill of capturing beautiful images in time, frozen on the screen for all to see, is exhilarating – all the more so if they are snapshots, or snippets, of nature’s finest. Being a photographer has sharpened my senses, in particular my sense of sight, and made me a more patient person. When one is keen to see with her own eyes what nature has to offer, one has to be prepared to wait for these breathtaking offerings – more often than not without regret.
Admittedly, I would never have thought of setting up a blog to present my personal collection of photos if not for the requirements of this Bio options module. I’m glad I eventually did, because it would be a pity not to share some of the better photos with other like-minded nature lovers, or simply visual people who can appreciate such scenes.
I especially delight in snapping photographs of insects, because everything about photographing them poses as a challenge of sorts. It is challenging to identify them through the masses and mosses of fauna; it is challenging to creep up to them quietly and put your lens close enough without alarming them; it is challenging to focus and glean a considerably clear shot because you require exceptionally steady hands, and favourable wind conditions.
I am fortunate to find a photography companion in my father, who often accompanies me on our frequent phototaking sprees. Most of the posts on this blog will contain photos taken in various parks and nature reserves in Singapore since March 2009, on outings with my father. (such posts are accurately dated according to when the photos were actually taken, although the actual posting on this blog might be later.) Other posts will contain images on intriguing patterns, or eccentric-looking wildlife. I’ve been told that I have odd photography taste; given a choice between a beautiful flower and a bizarre one, I would choose the latter. Likewise, given a choice between the weird and the wonderful, I would choose the weird.
